The First Theatre & Technology Awards!
18 months ago now, the concept of the Theatre & Technology Awards was born. In a world whereby technologies are advancing at speed, it was about time disciplines both onstage and online were celebrated. After noticing there was a gap in the market to champion these achievements, preparations to organise a team of industry professionals to judge as well as encourage critics and the public to cast their votes were well and truly underway. Fast forward to October 2017 and a gathering of theatre creatives were in attendance at the debut awards ceremony at the Bush Theatre. The evening, hosted by the charismatic Paul Lavers made for a memorable event.
The Bush theatre, champions of the use of technology were fantastic hosts, a big thank you to Rajiv Pattani and Michael Ager for the video projection that featured during the evening and the beautiful lighting.
Our awards sponsors, Projected Image made for fantastic collaborators. A company specialising in the creation of gobos, their unique statuettes and their custom made gobo really helped to establish the innovative nature of the evening.
A team of 11 judges chose their deserved winners; celebrated within their chosen fields, these industry professionals made their decisions based on a set of criteria. This year’s judges were:
Sound & Lighting Technician and Unsual Theatre AD Alistair Lindsay
East 15 Technical Tutor Steve Owens
Off West End Award winning designer Shawn Soh
Off West End Awards producer and PR Lauren Gauge
Founder and Editor of online publication Afridiziak Sophia Jackson
The Stage Newspaper’s Career Advisor John Byrne
Founder of Tamassy Creative Taiyo Nagano
Company Director of TriForce Promotions (Monologue Slam) Minnie Ayres
Writer and Producer of the award winning we Series ‘Dear Jesus’ Danielle Scott Haughton
Commercial Photographer and Filmmaker Richard Davenport
Tiata Fahodzi Artistic Director Natalie Ibu
And a big thank you to New Wonder Management Founder Lola Williams and AD of Baroque Theatre Adam Morley for each hosting and presenting a category.
Tamassy Creative owned by Best Poster Design judge Taiyo Nagano were responsible for the creation of the website and logo, we wanted to go for simplicity, and something instantly recognisable therefore deciding on running with the tag line “shining a spotlight”.
The evening wouldn’t have even existed without the fantastic work happening behind the scenes. Various creatives continually work to enhance the theatrical experience and with that innovate and bring new ideas to the table. Well done to all finalists and nominees!
The evening was also supported by a range of gift bag sponsors who offered some lovely gifts. A big thank you to Emily Crisps, T-Sticks, Cawston Press, Divine Chocolate for your time and support! Skinny Prosecco also supplied drinks for the evening. Winners will receive a framed award accompanied by a bottle of prosecco!
Here’s to next year, the Theatre & Technology Awards are always looking out for potential nominees as there’s a lot of great work happening out there.
